What Brings People to the Cities – Opportunities
1. Career opportunities are plentiful - Most multinational companies, as well as large, medium and local businesses, are based in cities. By moving to the city, you not only access to a broader job market but have better earning opportunities. That is my people to move to a big city, whether they’re studying or looking for career prospects.
2. It's easier to get around -Most of the big cities around the world possess an extensive transportation network, which not only allows easy access to various parts of the city but also is the preferred mode for majority of the residents. Mode of transportation such as trains, metro, taxis, buses, and tramway in some cities, are available to commute to work, to university, or go shopping and travelling around.
3. Plenty of things to do - One of the major reasons why cities attract so many diverse people and especially youth is because cities have some many activities and interesting events happening all year long. Also being home to diversified population helps them to always have something happening for people with different preferences and interests. Cities also have great nightlife, different types of cuisines, shows and museums as well as mix of outdoor and indoor activities.
Although cities have a higher cost of living, employers in the cities usually pay more. So, salaries are more compared to the rural ones and the quality of life improves. Since majority of the large corporations are based in the cities, the growth and career opportunities are much better and is one of the major people move to the cities.

Based on the survey by Rent.com, 55 percent people feel it’s still worth it to live in the city while 78 percent population feels that at some point of time they’ll move away from the city
Financial security and salary play a vital role in deciding people’s choice to stay in the city and whether that city is right for them. Also, there preference of socializing and other activities plays an important role in decision making.
Activities such as Vacations (44 %), Dining out (41.5 %), Saving money instead of spending (41.0%), Entertainment (37.2%) such as movies, concerts, etc. and one the most important – personal care (28.4%) are some of the important activities people sacrifice upon due to the cost of living in their city.

Although people in different cities have different spending patterns but there are still some common factors when it comes to spending and expenditure. People living in the major cities across the US spend major chunk of their earning on housing, followed by transportation. These two factors constituted around 50% of the average budget of the people living in the metropolises across the US. But if we look deeper, a person living in Houston is spending 20 percent of the budget on transportation and 32 percent on housing, while a New Yorker is spending 12 percent on transportation and 40 percent on housing. Apart from transportation and housing, food is also a major component when it comes to spending for example a person living in New York spends 11 percent of their budget on food, while in Miami it jumps up to 13.8 percent.
